Every day when you button up your school uniform, do you wonder how buttons came into existence? Who first thought about this simple yet handy way to hold clothes together?
Well, you will surprised to know that the first buttons ever to be discovered were in Mohenjo-Daro, in the Indus Valley! They were made of curved seashells and were used more for ornamental purpose than for fastening clothes. These buttons are believed to be around 5000 years old!
The buttons were actually made functional with buttonholes for fastening clothes by the Germans in the 13th century. They soon became popular and widespread, making snug fitting clothes fashionable.
Buttons took on several other uses which were far from their original purpose. They were designed to contain miniature working compasses during World Wars. They were even used by drug smugglers to hide illegal substances. What’s more, they were used in political campaigns too, especially by the Americans. Buttons also serve as a symbol of rank on military uniform.
So buttons have definitely come a long way. Today they are a fashion designer’s delight. They are also used in bags and wallets and can be of any material; plastic, metal, cloth and many more.
What a marvel this tiny object is!
