Star tortoise (Geochelone elegans)

They are found almost all over in india, living in grasslands, scrub forests, agricultural fields and the edges of deserts. This species as the name says has star like markings on the back of their shells.
The colouration on the shell is dark brownor black and yellow. In males the length of their shell is around 15 cm and in females it is about 38 cm. they are herbivores in nature and occasionally scavenge on dead animals. The eggs are laid in the monsoon season. In south india this is between October to January. They lay around 10 eggs which then take about 180 days to hatch. This tortoise is threatened mainly by illegal pet trade.
