Dainty steps

An elephant is literally walking on high-heeled shoes because the heel bones are raised right up inside the foot and rest on a thick pad pf fatty cartilage.
This essentially cushions the bones and aligns them vertically, thereby ensuring the body weight is rested over the pillar-like legs. African elephants have four toe-nails on the front three on their hind legs, whereas Asian elephants have five in the front and four at the back. Ironically, these are not toe-nails at all! They are just hardened skins that are not attached to toe nail bone. Buried inside, the elephants have five toes on each foot.
