The Vernal Hanging Parrot is the only parrot found in India, and are not to be mixed with parakeets. They are much smaller than most parakeets. They are so named as they like to hang upside down from branches and stalks in search of food. They are found in the forests of the western ghats, parts of eastern India and many parts of South East Asia.
The Slaty Headed Parakeets are the only birds of this species that undergo altitudinal migration. They are found in the lower and upper Himalayas ranging from Pakistan to Nepal to Arunachal Pradesh, and migrate to the lower Himalayan valleys in winter, beginning in October.
The Plum Headed Parakeet is endemic to the Indian subcontinent and are found in large flocks. They are beautiful birds, with the males having a plum coloured head and the female a purple-grey coloured head, with a green body. They have orange – yellow upper beaks and a darker lower beak.
The Rose – Ringed Parakeet’s original habitats stretched from Africa to Southern Asia; but have now been introduced to many parts of the world and have established themselves there. They are the subject of pet trade around the world.
