Where in India are the Most Pairs of Twins?

Kodinhi, a village in the Malappuram district in Kerala, has the unusual reputation of having the most number of twins in the country. It is estimated that there are at least 400 pairs of twins in a population of 2,000 families. The national average of twin births is not more than 9 in 1,000 births – in Kodinhi, it is around 45 in 1,000 births.

Kodinhi’s unique demography came to be noticed when a pair of twin sisters began to observe something unusual about their classmates. In 2006, Sameera and Femeena were students, who were then in Class 8, noticed that there were eight pairs of twins in their class, and that there were twins in other classes too. The sisters conducted a survey and found that there were 24 pairs of twins in their school! The news spread, and the villagers began to take a closer look at the pattern.

No one knows exactly what causes so many twins to be born here, but it is interesting to note that a similar phenomenon has been observed in Cândido Godói in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
