What is turmeric?

Turmeric is a spice grown mostly in India. The roots of the turmeric plant are dried and powdered. Turmeric is bright yellow, and is used in cooking. In north India, it is commonly called haldi while in the south it is usually known as manjal.

Indians realized that turmeric is good for health more than 4000 years ago. It has the power to kill germs and treat many diseases. It also makes your skin glow. Now, many face creams in the market contain turmeric.

India sends some of its turmeric to other countries. Erode in Tamil Nadu is known as ‘Turmeric City’ or ‘Yellow City’ because the highest quantity of turmeric is exported from there.

Starbucks, the American chain of coffee shops, sells a health drink called turmeric latte. It is a milky drink containing turmeric. Indian grandmothers have always said a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a pinch of some other spices in warm milk is a great way to treat a cold. Drink it even if you don’t have a cold, it will keep you healthy.

So next time you see turmeric powder being put in your food or drink, know that you are getting golden good health.
